The classical commentary on this hadith is blunt about what it was addressing: families holding out for status while religious, capable young people stayed unmarried. Preferring the familiar is not sinful. Refusing a man of good character purely because of his qaum is the case this warning was given for.

Qaum tells you almost nothing about how a marriage will go. The useful questions are plain: is the income real and steady, or described vaguely? Is the education claimed actually finished? Who lives in the house, and will the couple live with them? What does the family expect about the wife working or continuing her studies? Are dowry expectations being hinted at while officially denied? A proposal that survives those questions is a good one; one that fails them is a bad one no matter whose biradari it comes from.
